Doc Vs. Midwife

Some of you may or may not know that I prefer midwives over doctors for my baby deliveries. And I thought I might explain my thoughts...since everyone one knows how profound and important they are:)

It is very simple. I had a doctor for Isaac and a doctor for Luke and both times they are in and out and are very nice but really are only there to get the job done as quickly as possible. Stirrups, wires, medicine, etc...anything to make the job FASTER. I decided to try a midwife with Ruby and absolutely LOVED my experience. I deliver at a hospital (would never ever even consider doing it at home---first of all I do not want all that mess in my house---but there are many many other reasons as well). For me, a midwife means the birthing experience is all about me and my baby. Doesn't matter what makes life easier for the doc or nurse...all that matters is what I want. YES I want that epidural...NO I do not want stirrups:). I love that the midwife is my advocate and when the nurse says no, you can't stand up, just lay there--my midwife will pipe in, of course she can stand up if that is more comfortable. The nurse admitted the only reason she wanted me in the bed was because it was easier for her.

All of this being said I also LOVE doctors. The REAL ones:) I like to call the midwifes view of medicine "granola medicine." I guess another term could be Holistic medicine--which I believe is mostly mind over matter and since I have no trust in it whatsoever, it doesn't work for me. Pretty much, I do not trust most medical advice the midwives give me--true medical advice...not the little stuff...they aren't that bad with the little stuff. But I pretty much just use them for the delivery part and save all the medical advice for the doctors. That being said--if I had complications during my pregnancies, or deliveries, I would choose to use a doctor--but I don't, my pregnancies and deliveries are healthy and normal. There is of course, a doctor that could step in at any time so if there were a complication, we can have some back up--but since I feel that most skill from deliveries comes from experience, I don't worry too much. So that is my bit on Doc Vs. Midwifes. I just like to pick and choose when to use each kind!

My great grandma was a midwife and there are lots of doctors in my family so I love both:)

I guess I am going off on this because the most granola midwife (who I actually really really like) ordered me to have ANOTHER (this was my 3rd one) ultrasound that was pointless. The baby has dropped and that is the ONLY reason I am measuring 4 weeks behind again (I could have told her that!)--I am due in 10 days so I was not happy about having to go do another ultrasound for no reason--we have to pay for these! The baby is fine and measures the exact same as Luke if he/she was born today (Luke was induced 9 days early because of the same issue they were worried about with this baby--but I had a doctor then and after the non stress test she said, "I'm not worried but if you want, I will induce you." HECK YES I SAID! But the midwifes are NOT like that. Pros and cons I guess!:)

**A sidenote...my brother, who is a doctor, and who is also hilarious told me that "It (meaning the birthing process) was made user friendly from the beginning, and which a little bit of training, the pizza delivery boy could do it:)--just thought that was funny.

  1. First I am super excited for you! Can't wait to hear/see pics of your new beautiful baby!!
I agree I had a MUCH better experience with my midwife with Casen... horrible experience with the doctors with Cache. My midwife was there for ME and I loved her! She was so awesome. My midwife did say she would let me choose to be induced if I wanted, but lucky for me Casen wanted to join us exactly 2 weeks early. She was all for what I wanted, etc. Midwives are great emotional support! She was truly there for me. She even apologized that I didn't have a pain free birthing experience bc she knew how much I wanted one. So nice. I guess I just don't take epidurals 100%.
It's tough carrying the baby when the baby drops! I love you!! Thanks for my card too:)

  2. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I've always relied strictly on the doctors and have wondered what exactly the point of a midwife is. Your explanation makes complete sense. Best of luck in the coming days!

  3. Loved my midwife I had with Abe. I had good doctors with my first, but the actual delivery ended up being way too "medical" and I knew I wanted to have something as different as I could, and it was everything I could have hoped for the second time around (although I still felt like it was pretty in and out, but that's our fault for getting to the hospital 18 minutes before he was born.

Good luck with these last couple weeks!!!

  4. And sometimes the pizza delivery boy does do it, training or not! I don't really care who's there to catch one way or the other. I go natural and try to get people out of my way as much as possible. I only think of doctors as insurance.

    Good luck!

  5. Did you know your grandmother mid-wife delivered your mother---at the hospital because the doctor wasn't there and the nurse didn't know what to do? Love, Mom
